Before I talk about what I dislike about Overlord there are things I did like about it really only being the plot. It seems interesting when reading it on paper Yggdrasil is one of the biggest VR MMOs but after 12 years the servers are being shut down and only a few dedicated players like Momonga are around. He stays until the end but when the timer ends he is teleported into the world of the game inside of the avatar he created. His goal now is to rebuild his army and find anyone else who might be trapped. At the start I had some hope but it quickly turns into the boring fantasy that a lot of these stories end up falling into with the hero who is too overpowered to be threatened and too anonymous to be interesting like Momonga. He is seriously the least interesting main character in anime the only redeemable thing about his character is the design when the mangaka actually wants to draw him in his skeletal form. Its obvious that the mangaka doesnt even bother telling us who Momonga is outside Yggdrasil. Most isekai you get the story of who the main character was in the first chapteror first couple of minutes if animated followed up by them dying or being transported into the new world. We have no idea what kind of player he was or any insight about how other players viewed him within the guild. We dont even get to see his face outside of the VR gear we just get a glimpse of his generic looking main character haircut in a single panel. The only positive we can get from this is that his character is an annoying pervy otaku who gets thrown into insane scenarios like a lot of isekai does. Aside from a couple of boob grabs he does take a very logical and smart approach to his situation. He doesnt freak out at first and makes an effort to meet up with his old team members and begins to get allies and strengthen his defenses. Once Momonga gets used to the world the storys interesting plot just falls apart. He has a group of NPC minions that obey everything he says he has a small number of girls that fight for him. One of them Albedo is following him simply because he rewrote her code in a second because he knows how to do that. Hes insanely overpowered thanks to decades of grinding so nobody can actually fight him. He certainly doesnt want to return to his normal life because he has no family friends or a girlfriend but neither does he have any to anyone in this universe besides himself and his minions. So wheres the drama or conflict? Whats his real drive to keep going? I dont even think the writers know as far as Ive gotten. Its not like hes gotten a new world to explore his base is located in a peaceful grassland and there are generic medieval MMO villages with some other NPCs none of it is compelling in their own right to give any information about the world. But why bother with an interesting protagonist and some interesting drama when you could conjoin the most barebone fantasy tropes with an overdone and deadbeat premise and stop there? Why waste your time writing a compelling medieval isekai when you can spend your time having a loli vampire and a yandere angel fight over who wants to be the wife of the main character? I pray for the mangas sake this isnt a continuous running gag through the story. The artstyle does look like it belongs in a video game Ill give the mangaka that. It really does give off that horrendously over designed video game character with terrible armor and no style to tie it all together I can see this being in a mobile fantasy RPG though. Momonga looks like he was ripped straight out of one his design just reeks of edgy 10th grader drawing a dungeon boss. Admittedly it is cool when its put into detail but the artist quickly puts him in some plain looking black armor or a mask. All of the other characters are just your run of the mill generic fantasy types. It doesnt make you feel like youre being transported to a new world it uses old isekai clichs and hopes the reader will fill in what the mangaka couldnt bother with.
